Meet
the team
These are our neighbourhood police officers, stop and chat when
you see them around. It's only by chatting to locals that our community
team can offer support and gain valuable information.

Neighbourhood
Policing...
Neighbourhood
policing is a national programme introduced to North Yorkshire in
2005. It is all about working with communities and partner organisations
to deliver more effective services. Selby West team priority is
to make the area a safer place to live. Inspector Abbott's team
will do this in a variety of ways including listening to our needs,
through personal contact with residents and businesses and at Joint
Action Groups (JAGs).
Having
listened to our priorities, the Selby West Safer Neighbourhood Team
will then deliver focussed action, together with thier partner agencies,
directed toward tacking our priorities. They will target persistent
offenders. They will patrol 'hotspot' areas in order to identify
and arrest offenders. They will also ebgage with our local schools
in order to involve the young people within our communities. FInally
they will report back to communities, providing us with updated
information and results.
Inspector
Abbott quotes "Our aim is to involve you, because without you
communities cannot flourish and develop. My request to you is that
you take part. There are lots of ways you can help. We value your
support and would love to hear from you".

Bogus
callers alert...
What should you do?
|
 |
Gang/s carrying
out the distraction burglary's, target the elderly and vulnerable. They
are clearly putting some effort into finding out who is alone and which
couples are frail.
Experience has shown that they always park their car down a different
street, or get picked up elsewhere in the village. Two, sometimes more,
knock on the door usually saying that they are from the 'Water Board'
or Yorkshire Water. Whilst one keeps you busy chatting, the other ransacks
your house.
The message
North Yorkshire police want to get across to everyone, is that if you
are elderly keep your door chain on when answering the door, ALWAYS
ask for photogaphic ID and if in any doubt tell them to 'go' away. If
you are at all suspicious ring the police on 999, they are very keen to
speak to these "workers". Same
for neighbours, if you see anyone behaving suspiciously, watching a property
where you know an elder person/s lives, ring the police on 999 immediately.
Other bogus
callers in our area at the moment are a gang(s) who claim to work for
'The Council', doing a job up the road and say to you "we have a
bit of tarmac left would you like your drive doing?" They do NOT
work for the Council. There are recent cases where a so-called builder
has knocked on the door of an elderly resident, offering to repair the
roof etc. These people start with "If you have a bit of cash, £100
, I will nip to Doncaster to get a few spares" and once they have
your cash are never to be seen again.

Any
dodgy or suspicious callers touting for building, council, water
or electricity work - get their vehicle registration number and
ring either the police on 999 or dial Consumer Direct on
0845 04 05 06.
This
is North Yorkshire Trading Standards, They will get someone out
pretty quickly. Be safe - always answer the door with the chain
on!
|
|
If
in doubt - Call the POLICE!
They
are here to help and love catching criminals.
