Whitley Allotments Club

Good progress is being made following the recent meeting of potential holders at the George and Dragon Pub. It is hoped that we might have allotments available for people to start planting in Spring 2010!

We have identified a piece of land behind the houses in Whitefield Lane which is big enough for about 20 allotments. It is flat, fairly sheltered and well located. The Parish Council will be making urgent enquiries about buying it, and also about obtaining access for vehicles. If we are successful in obtaining it, we will need to clear the undergrowth and get it rotivated.

Potential allotment holders who went to see the land recently agreed that it would be suitable, but were all a bit daunted by the weeds! A Whitley Allotment Society was formed, which will organise the allotments and apply for grants and subsidies to develop the site. The Society will be affiliated to the national allotment society which is called the National Society for Allotment and Leisure Gardeners - natsoc@nsalg.org.uk. Rents for the allotments are likely to be about £40 per year.
